CLUB DIRECTORS EXAMINATION

 

A prospective candidate must know:

    Minimum
1. How to set up the tables and prepare the club-rooms for a session of bridge - more specifically 2 questions
     
  ·        How to arrange the tables in the easiest and most logical sequence  
  ·        The correct time allocation for each round of boards  
  ·        The minimum number of boards required to qualify for the award of masterpoints.  
     
2. The basic Mitchell Movement of boards and pairs as used by the majority of bridge clubs in New Zealand - more specifically 6 questions
     
  ·        Where to place any possible feed-in boards  
  ·        Where to place any potential phantom table should it be necessary  
  ·        When and how to call any skip rounds that may be necessary.  
     
3. How to match-point a score sheet - more specifically 4 questions
     
  ·        how to calculate any score earned (without reference to a ready scorer)  
  ·        How to match-point passed-in scores(s).  
  (There will be a compulsory simple matchpointing question based on 8 - 12 tables, worth 5 marks.)  
     
4. How to administer and interpret all the rules of Bridge 2 questions
     
  ·        How to instruct on the correct marking of the bidding pad for written bidding  
  ·        How to evaluate and arbitrate in breaches of etiquette in the game of bridge  
  ·        How to correctly apply the NZ Bridge Regulations with particular regard to the Alerting Procedure and interpretations of specific Laws.  
     
5. How to correctly apply the Laws of Duplicate Bridge as written in the Official Rule book. 10 questions
     
     
6. To show a good understanding of the Laws that cover the following areas 15 questions
     
  ·        Revoke  
  ·        Insufficient Bid  
  ·        Bids/Calls out of Rotation  
  ·        Lead Penalties  
  ·        Penalty Cards  
  ·        Leads out of Turn  

* Each question will require only one answer
* The answer is to be in two parts:
    (a) a True/False answer or A short explanatory sentence
    (b) The Law referred to in arriving at the answer
* The pass mark is 80%.

A restricted pass (where 80% is not obtained) will be given where a candidate demonstrates a good understanding of the questions from sections 1, 2 and 6.

A Director with a Restricted Pass is only qualified to direct at ordinary club sessions.

1. North as defender inadvertently drops the eight of diamonds in the process of playing the ace of spades to win the current trick.  You rule this is a major penalty card.  True or False?

2. Partner gives the opponents an incorrect explanation of your partnership agreement.  When should you correct this mis-explanation?

ANSWER You cannot correct this mistaken explanation until:

(i) the end of the auction if you are either declarer or dummy,

(ii) at the end of play if you are a defender in both cases, only after you have called the Director
